San Joaquin Delta College President Kathy Hart said it was the perfect day to dedicate the next project in a series of improvements at the college as she cut the ribbon signaling the opening of of the new state-of-the-art Horticulture Center Tuesday afternoon. Picture: And attendees agreed it was - sunny with a slight breeze- outside the two new working greenhouses and updated plant nursery, a "production classroom" according to horticulture professor Mike Toscano. He proudly showed off the updated facilities saying that all the plants had been grown from seeds, cutting or plugs. "Everything here has student value-added," said Toscano. "Each plant has been worked on by a student." The horticulture nursery is a hidden gem for plant-seekers with prices way below your average retail or big box stores. It's open to the public each Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and will be open the same hours this Saturday for a "weekend sale". Plants incudes a variety of ornamental, vegetables and flowers. The center also features a vibrant low-water maintenance "drought" demonstration garden with plants and landscaping ideas for homeowners. These demonstration gardens serve as additional instructional labs. The center is located on the north side of Delta's campus.
