Stockton police offer a few more details about OIS

STOCKTON, CA - Stockton police say a man shot and killed by an officer last Friday night during a struggle had illegal contraband in his car.

Officer Pete Smith said an examination of Luther Brown Jr's. car which two officers pulled over for not having license plates revealed what appeared to be rock cocaine, marijuana, prescription pills and a large amount of cash.

Brown, 32, ran from officers, Smith, said, and there was a foot chase. When officers caught up to him a few houses down from the traffic stop on Burlington Place, Smith said Brown fought with them and was able to gain control of one of the officer's batons. When Brown tried to hit the officer with the baton, the other officer shot Brown several times, stopping the attack, Smith said.

Brown was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later.

The officers, one who has been with the force 11 years, the other four years, had minor injuries.

An investigation into the shooting is underway.

Smith said the attack on a Stockton police officer was the 30th thus far this year. There were 14 in all of 2011.
