Standoff suspect found dead with self-inflicted gunshot wound | Crime
STOCKTON, CA - A man suspected of shooting at law enforcement after a car chase was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday night, police said.
Stockton police were in a standoff with the suspect at a home on Golden Bear Circle since 1:33 p.m.; police evacuated nearby homes and blocked off a three to four block radius, Officer Joe Silva said.
Silva said the incident began at 1:33 p.m. when members of a joint auto theft task force tried to pull over a suspect at N. Gettysburg Place and W. Ben Holt Drive. The driver of the vehicle sped off and officers pursued the vehicle.
The driver stopped the car in the driveway of a home on Golden Bear Circle and officers pulled up behind the car.
Silva said someone in the vehicle fired at least one round at the officers and a member of the task force fired shots back at the suspects.
No officers were hit in the exchange.
Those in the car retreated and were believed to have run into the home or its backyard, Silva said.
More than a dozen homes on Golden Bear Circle were evacuated and a SWAT unit and California Highway Patrol officers were called to the scene, Silva said. People who were evacuated were asked to go the nearby Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church for their safety
Nearly nine hours later, SWAT and law enforcement broke down the perimeter. Silva said the man was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
